Seriously waste of a state. I have step sisters from there and I do a good job of keeping my opinion to myself, but I do need somoene to explain to me why it is useful as space? And this is not misplaced hatred. As I said I have step sisters from there so I had to spend days of my life in a car driving there to get them and bring them to the great state of Kentucky. You knew instantly when you got to Mississippi, because that’s how much it sucked. You just knew.

So tomorrow the Rebels from Ole Miss come to town (shocker they are in the south and they are the rebels, that’s -100 creativity points). Tomorrow’s real battle is that they play at 7pm Eastern (6pm Central) and therefore one has to wonder how they are going to inform their Lost Watching Party that really we’re not just TIVO-ing Lost, we also much watch the rest of the Kentucky game first. It’s for the commericals we swear.

What it maybe a good idea to know about the Rebels:

Arkansas beat them on Sunday. They were supposed to play on Saturday but that little piggie couldn’t go out in the snow so they rescheduled for Sunday. And Arkansas won (you remember them? Roteni and company?) That said we have a team from Mississippi with something to prove. Even though they are on the road and are heading up to Rupp and we all know what a deterrent that is for other teams. The Rebels loss has dropped them to 25 on one poll and completely off of the USA today poll. And boys and girls I haven’t seen 40 consecutive minutes of basketball out of the Cats yet, which gives plenty of room for someone who is hungry and itching to prove themselves.

I’m hoping the win against Vandy has given them some confidence and the extra coaching time and hearts to hearts are going to pay off. I also hope that Coach Cal stops letting people talk to them. I know they’re talented I know they’re wonderful. I want to chat with them too, but they need to be concentrating on playing basketball and not how awesome we all think they are. And also hope that just like Gimpy they are going to be good and pissed off that one loss on the road dropped them down to 4th.

People we are strongly disliking today:

#12 Chris Warren, appears to be their best scorer. Another shorty (but we don’t seem to deal with that too well) at 5’10″

#02 Reginald Buckner, he was out with an ankel injury against Arkansas (sledding is dangerous folks), but if he is back and playing I have money that the announcers are going to remind us that Mr. Buckner passed on KY (among others) to go to Ole Miss.

and keeping an eye on those 3 point shooters: #24 Terrico White and the previously mentioned shorty #12 Chris Warren.

Okay technically I’m waking up in a couple o f hours  to do some more of t hat work thing. Just jumped on  here quickly to defend my honor and  my sometimes girly beer drinking and saw that no one had mentioned what a waste of a state Mississippi was. My sincere apologizes to all Cat fans (and other humans) that must live there.

As a born and bred Kentucky fan, I usually relish in North Carolina’s woes.  Seeing the boys in baby blue argyle fail was wonderful for me while I was at Davidson, a small college (STEPHEN CURRY WHAT!) near Charlotte.  I put on my Kentucky blue and puffed around campus like a peacock after we beat them in 2002.  I didn’t hate them as much as I hated Duke, but man, every day that UNC lost was a good day.  After college, I lived with a UNC fan in Nashville and couldn’t even trash talk when the game came around each December–we were too bad and they were too good.  I once forbade my sister from buying a pair of sneakers because they were powder blue and white (Lori, you’re welcome.  Those shoes would have been a bad decision).

Until this year.  Sure, beating them in December was wonderful.  I danced, I smiled, fun times were had by all.  Kentucky was relevant again.  But something wasn’t quite right.  UNC didn’t seem the same.  Maybe it’s because “Booby Eyes” Hansbrough was gone?  Apparently not.  Over the past few months, the reigning National Champ has been struggling…and it’s not helping our tournament resume one bit.  There is talk they won’t make the tournament. A perennial power reduced to the NIT; fans ashamed; coaches crying; recruits balking.

Sound familiar?

After their loss at UVA on Sunday, Roy Williams asked, “How can you go any lower?  Be honest: How can it be any worse than it is right now?”  Forgive me for a brief bout of sympathy for the powder blue boys.  Is Roy Williams melodramatic?  Yes.  But please, we have been there.  We were there less than a year ago.  The difference is that it was US asking those questions, not our coach, who drowned his sorrows at Harry’s instead.  That’s the scary thing for North Carolina–they have a great coach and some decent talent and they’re still effing up.  At least we can blame our NIT berth on Billy.  What can UNC blame this on besides lack of motivation, effort, and what seems like a hangover from being at the top for so long?

I still don’t like you, Tarheels, but I do feel for you.  If you don’t make the tournament, take heart.  You’ll be back and then I can really enjoy it when we beat the crap out of you.

Some thoughts and links on a LeBron lovin’ Monday:

-Kentucky is now fourth in the AP poll and third in the ESPN/USA Today poll.

-Some buzz today about a possible 68 or 96-team NCAA tournament in the future, which could happen if CBS and the tournament break up and the NCAA decides to get in bed with Turner Sports (or Fox or ESPN).  WTF?!  Why would you mess with success?  Expanding the field just seems pointless.  March Madness is one of the only post-season setups that works.  It’s like the NCAA is trying to make up for the mess that is the BCS by fiddling with the NCAA Tournament.  In the end, yes, it is all about more money…31 more games means more tickets and commercials to be sold, etc. etc….but seriously, half of the drama of March Madness is seeing who gets in and who doesn’t.  What’s the fun of letting everyone in?  We’ll need magnifying glasses just to read our brackets.  NCAA fail.

-Our wonderkid John Wall stepped out of his PR-expert shell after the game Saturday and told the media he was frustrated with his performance the past few weeks.  Maybe Wall has just now realized (probably for the first time in his basketball career) that he is, in fact, human.  A pretty amazing human at that.  Our SEC schedule so far has proven to be much tougher and more physical than non-conference play–shocker.  Even though he’s a superstar, teams are scrutinizing Wall more than ever and are prepared with defensive schemes and double teams.  Cal talked to Wall after his therapy session with the media and told him to chill and have some fun.  Relax, John Wall!  Everyone, including Dick Weiss, still loves you!

-In Wild and Wacky Sports News, the National Football League has acquired the rights to the phrase “Who Dat.” Dat’s right, the beloved New Orleans Saints cheer that they’ve been using for years and years.  This just-plain-mean move prohibits New Orleans vendors from selling merchandise with the wording and further proves that corporate America destroys everything.  Damn the man, New Orleans, damn the man.

UPDATE–Just heard on NPR of all places that the NFL is backing down on the issue.  The Who Dat nation has spoken.

The sun is shinning so the snow is melting. And at the same time causing the world to take on a glittery brightness. Meaning one would be wise to wear their shades out doors.

It at that moment of putting on my movie star sunglasses that I thought, oh why not put this winter behind us and have a summer beer.

Now I will tell you that I tend to lend more towards the dark side of beers. I’m not so much a hoppy fan, but do understand that they have their place in the process. I do enjoy the seasonals. Maybe it’s because enjoy torturing myself with limited availability.

Anyhow I’ve dipped into my hidden stash of seasonal beers (you have to stock up on these things) and rescued one Honey Moon. Now Honey Moon is made by those folks over at BlueMoon. While I am a Hefeweizen fan, I’ve never been one for the Blue Moon. However, I do enjoy both of their seasonals: Honey Moon and Harvest Moon.

Honey Moon tells you right on the bottle that it is a summer ale so it is perfect for thumbing your nose at Father Winter (I mean really a snow storm four days before Ground Hogs day, I’m going with 6 more weeks of winter).

Honey Moon does have a strong honey taste (so make sure that you’re prepared for that). It also has Blue Moon’s pale and white wheat and orange peel mix.  A close examination of the bottle reveals that Honey Moon is a two time gold medal winner. A trip to website determined that was in the World Beer Cup (you know as opposed to just making up your own competition).
Anyway Honey Moon is lovely with a sweet honey taste. I think it’s more of an every now and then beer as opposed to an everyday drinking adventure. As you have not had a chance to hoard up a few bottles then you’ll need to wait until May to get some.

Thoughts on a long game at Rupp this afternoon:

-The Cats bounced back after their misstep in Columbia, beating A.J. Oglivy and the Frosted Tips 85-72. The team looked pretty good, although a myriad of fouls and quiet Rupp crowd made for a pretty boring game at times.  The crowd seemed to wake up in the second half when DeMarcus Cousins put the child in manchild by bitching at the refs and getting a technical over a goaltending call.  After flirting with a ten point gap, the Cats finally sealed the deal and got the win.  Thank goodness.

-In a surprising move, Darnell Dodson got the starting nod over Eric Bledsoe due to a “coaching decision.”  Is Cal just trying to shake things up and get the team’s attention?  Dodson capitalized on the opportunity, scoring 16 points, 12 of those from 3-point land.

-DeMarcus Cousins.  Manchild in the truest sense of the word.  He is capable of controlling the game, evidenced by his fast start this afternoon and finished up with 21 points and 10 boards.  He is a force in the post.  But, he is equally capable of acting like a twelve-year-old.  Cousins lost his temper at least three times in the game and Cal made him sit on the bench for about ten minutes to cool off.  He has got to find a way to keep his emotions in check or he could become a liability in March.

-LeBron James was at the game, wearing a confusingly preppy gray and blue striped cardigan.  Apparently he talked to the team at halftime, and thrilled the crowd when he came out as the “Y” in the Kentucky cheer.  Some players were sporting the shoes LeBron designed for the team, which has to mean the new LeBron jerseys aren’t far behind.  The ESPN cameras showed LeBron throughout the game, and one has to think that this is HUGE for recruiting…glad The King made the trip to snowy Lexington.  The program is incredibly lucky to have him as a friend.

-Patrick Patterson must have read my post earlier this week. The big man apparently worked overtime with Cal this week on his three point shot and it paid off–12 points, 9 from behind the arc.  But, although he can be a threat from the outside, I’d still like to see him get more touches near the basket.

-Over 50 fouls called today…unbelievable.

-Oglivy’s play was a non-factor, but his hair was not.  Brad Nessler and Jimmy Dykes reference the Aussie’s frosty locks more than once during the broadcast, which is a good indicator of how slow the game was at points.  Either that or they really like late 90′s hairstyles.

-Louisville, Duke and Texas lost in their game…Will Barnes call Cal for advice this time?

Double TT has already informed you that there is a bit of snow storm here in Nashville. The roads are white, the news is telling me all aboout how this is the heaviest snow we’ve seen in several years. THey are crouching down and showing us that there is snow on the ground (as if we could not glance out the window and see the same thing). Oh it’s fun times. Now as we are in the south this did lead me to wonder if those  boys in Black and Gold had made it out of the city. As I went on a search for this I found a truly ridiculous blog that was leading a rip on Tennessee so wonderful that it made my heart glow a little. In fact I will admit I was so happy Vandy beat TN on Sunday that I have had to hold my trash talk off for a few days.

But as I’m reading the blog I did pick up a few things that I wouldn’t have thought about. I was going to talk about AJ Ogillsby or whatever that tall goofy Australian kid’s name is. But the blog said that him and his other little friend Taylor were not even visible for the first half of the game. Oh strife….

Vandy is bonded together because they all packed up their physics books and took a little Australian field trip to visit AJ’s sheep farm this summer. And I am totally not making that up. I leave it to you to make all the jokes that it deserves.

Oh and Vandy lost to Western Ky in Nashville…

Here are the people we are watching and feeling strongly about:

AJ Ogilvy (04) your name is stupid. No really stupid. For whatever reason I persist in believing it is Oglisby which at least makes sense but in reality it is Ogilvy…what is that anyway. AJ is a star of sorts.

And you have Mr. Jeffery Taylor (44) does a little better than Ogilvy

And my favorite the kid named Festus (03)

Bottom line, what’s with the crazy names.

I’m not afraid of Vandy…however they are dangerous. I felt the loss was coming with South Carolina and if it didn’t happen tehre then I know it would happen with Vandy. And gain it’s much better to lose on the road than to lose at home. So I feel like we have a good shot at seeing 40 minutes of basketball. The cats all have something to prove. The last time they had something to prove was against Arkansas. And that’s as close to 40 continuous minutes of basketball we’ve seen.

3pm Central tomorrow so get your sledding done before hand and settle in with some warm winter snacks.

Good morning, boys and girls.  Since the Snowpocalypse  is upon us here in Nashville, I’m currently writing this post from bed while I watch the flakes start to fall.

So, what will we watch while we’re snowed in this weekend?  With only the ProBowl to satisfy our football fix, let’s fill up on some College Basketball!  Here’s your RGWS weekend TV lineup to keep you and your remote nice and warm.

Saturday

Louisville at #9 West Virginia, ESPN, noon EST–It’s been a while since we’ve checked up on Ricky P and the Dirty Birds.  Will they make the tournament?  They’ll have to perform well in the Big East to have a shot.  And West Virginia is a pretty formidable foe at home.  Rick will have to pull more than a Porcini’s breadstick out of his hat to beat the Mountaineers.  A Cardinal loss will be a wonderful way to warm up before you head out sledding.

#7 Duke at #11 Georgetown, CBS, 1 p.m. EST–What’s better than Louisville losing?  Louisville AND Duke losing!

#23 Vanderbilt at #1 Kentucky, ESPN, 4 p.m. EST–The Cats need this win.  Vandy is coming off an impressive win over the Vols in Knoxville and are sitting atop the SEC East.  Cal’s kittens are still licking their wounds after an embarrassing trip to South Carolina.  The Cats better come out focused and on fire.  No, really…I live in Nashvegas and don’t want to hear Vandyland gloat for the next month (cough, SANTA, cough, SUSAN).

#2 Kansas at #13 Kansas State, ESPN, 7 p.m. EST–I’m looking forward to seeing what Kansas will do vs. a surprising KSU team that beat Texas a week or so ago.  If Kansas loses, what will that do to Kentucky’s ranking?  I think we move down to #3 regardless…

Sunday

Florida at #14 Tennessee, CBS, 1 p.m. EST–Billy the Kid vs. Bruce the Sweaty.  Can Tennessee bounce back after two loses?  Will Bruce sweat through his blazer?  What can we expect from Alex Tyus’ hairline?

Pro Bowl, in Miami, ESPN, 7:20 p.m. EST–What will Brett Favruh and Tom Brady do–oh wait.  Yeaaah…NFL junkies can tune in while the rest of us yawn and tweak our jambalaya recipes for next Sunday.

First it was John Wooden.  Then it was President Obama.  Now it is Texas coach Rick Barnes and…Bill Cosby?!

Seems like everyone has some advice for our Wildcats this year.  Does anyone else find it absolutely hilarious that Cosby called Calipari after Kentucky lost?  Can you imagine the conversation?  In my head, it goes like this:

[ring, ring]

Coach Cal:  Hello?

Bill Cosby:  John?  Is this my boy John Calipari?  Hi, this is Bill Cosby.

Coach Cal:  Bill Cosby?  Really?

Cosby:  Yes, John!  Bill Cosby!

Cal:  Well, okay.  Hi Mr. Cosby.  I’m honored.

Cosby:  John, I’m calling to tell you that you’ve gotta get your boys together.  You’ve gotta get with each other–I’m talking about talk!  Talk to each other. I want you to tell your team they have to play like they’ve been there (actual quote).

Cal:  I agree–
